GOAL OF LIFE2

Summary: Elaborates on the sentence of the day explaining that life is a continuous process through many cycles of birth and death with the ultimate goal of divinising life.

Pb. reading sentence of the day: ‘Life on earth is not a means and a task, by transformation it is the goal and the realisation.’ – The Mother, Sri Aurobindo Ashram

Life is not of course to carry on in the usual manner or simply a means to some comfortable egoistic existence: it is always a seeking to transform, evolve, manifest something greater each time. That is the idea. Meditation is the basis for that. Also life is not just a means and a passage to some nirvâṇa. Only if you look at it as a goal of a greater manifestation, creation and life have meaning and an intention, otherwise it does not make sense. Or it would stop mid-way at the level of the human species for it finally to disappear.

Why the reality of coming into life? Why was this life ever created? Or why did life ever come into being? The human species is not the last statement to life but only one of the steps leading to something greater and higher in its long line of steps, right from the most basic life to the complex human life, and from there for life to carry on to manifest a greater and nobler consciousness, a Divine consciousness.

So the objective of meditation does not mean either stepping aside of life or to carry on as usual, rather a participation in life so that life may evolve to a greater manifestation. And within that it is also a passage because you pass from this life into the next, you pass from this body to the next body, so that life is continuous as eternal life for this objective to be achieved. And it is only then that life would be respected and ennobled and divinised.

Of course through your meditation you can step aside of it, reach unto nirvâṇa and give it up. So you as life would not exist anymore having transcended it, dissolving your life in the featureless reality of the spirit, call it nirvâṇa, enlightenment or whatever it may be. Within that there are many passages that life makes from one segment to another segment through your birth and death. But they are only segments of that one eternal life in its evolutionary march through self-realisation and the manifestation of its own divinity – not to be divine elsewhere but here upon this very earth, in this body of five elements; to manifest the whole Truth within this frame. That is the true significance of life and this is what life is working out. At the human level you can consciously take to it.

Read it once more. (Pb. reads)

Goal here meaning not to continue in the usual existence but to grow each time into something greater and more, even so in the consciousness.
