Fullness chant
Om Purnam Adaha Purnam Idam Purnat Purnam Udachyate
Purnasya Purnam Adaya Purnam Evavashishyate
That is Fullness, this is Fullness. From Fullness, Fullness alone evolves.
Fullness, resolving to Fullness, Fullness alone abides.
This is a chant of Fullness, that which you are and that which is all. It is a reaching to Fullness; it is a reaching to the experience – realization of what we have aspired for, prayed for through the above chant – so to abide in Fullness, in that which is the True, in that which is the Light, in that which is Immortal.
Verily all is Fullness: that is Fullness, this is Fullness. From Fullness, Fullness alone manifests. And Fullness reaching to Fullness, Fullness alone abides. So from the Unmanifest to the Manifest, it is all Fullness. In the state of Manifestation, it is Fullness – in the state of the Unmanifest, it is Fullness. Through all this interchange Fullness alone abides. Through all your activity, you remain in Fullness; when you are beyond activity you are still in Fullness. When you are before activity you are in Fullness; when you are after activity you are in Fullness – there is never a moment when you are not full. This is the experience.
That is Fullness, this is Fullness… That is Fullness, That which is the cause of Manifestation, That which is beyond Manifestation is fullness; this is Fullness – the Manifested, that which is the effect is fullness, the Manifestation is Fullness.
Fullness to Fullness, Fullness alone evolves: Fullness evolves from Fullness. Fullness resolving to Fullness, Fullness alone abides. All is Fullness; all is abundance.
This mantra is describing the whole process of the Reality in its existence, in its self-completeness, self-existence, and in its self-manifestation.
This process can be understood when you look at a large expanse of water, for example the ocean when there are no waves. The whole ocean is there present, but is all-calm: there are no waves, there is no activity, there is no creation – there is no manifestation, as it were. It is complete in that moment – and the power to manifest is within it. The Power and the Ocean are one.
The ocean is existence, the ocean is the power, it is the ground in which the manifestation takes place; it is also the manifestation, that which takes place.
So now when the waves happen there is a whole sea change in the ocean. What do you see now? When you now look at the ocean, you see the active ocean, the ocean in manifestation. It was full when it was in the state of Unmanifest; and when it is in the state of Manifestation, it is still the same ocean, and it is full now as it was full before.
There has been no reduction or increase: one is the state of Unmanifest, the other the state of Manifest. And they both are representative of the same Reality.
You can use this comparison for yourself: in the moments when you are quiet and complete, you are full. Again when you are in activity, and you experience waves of thoughts, waves of emotions, feelings, everything, basically you in manifestation, you in action – you are still yourself complete and full. And then you resolve back to being completely quiet, wherein you still are full. From Fullness to Fullness and back to Fullness, Fullness alone abides.
So this whole process of Manifestation and the Unmanifest is expressed by this mantra. Purnam Adaha meaning the Unmanifest and Purnam Idam meaning this creation, this Manifestation, are both states of Fullness. That is Fullness, this is Fullness – verily it is always full in any condition, in any state. This is an experience; this is a realisation that is to come.
Purnat Purnam Udachyate – from Fullness alone Fullness is manifested. Usually when something comes out of something you say there has been a reduction, or a taking away: it has come out of it, but not here. From the Unmanifest state to the Manifest it is all Fullness. Even in the form of an individual wave: that wave is still full in its experience of itself. Otherwise there will never be a complete liberation. So you are in fact the microform process of the macrocosmic process, an exact replica. You are the Reality.
Purnat Purnam Udachyate Purnasya Purnam Adaya Purnam Evavashishyate: from Fullness to Fullness, Fullness alone is; and when Fullness resolves to Fullness, Fullness alone abides. In this you experience the essential truth that abides in everything – even so in an atom, or the smallest particle that is there.
Every moment we can experience the Fullness – but we do not – in our present incomplete condition. So we seek the Fullness in the next moment, or the next few moments, through our desires, through the fulfillment of our desires – which is outside us. But when you discover the Fullness within yourself, even though you would interact in the outside it would be in Fullness, out of Fullness.
And this does not take away the dynamism of life: for it would not only be a static experience of Fullness – it would be a dynamic and active one. And that is when all works become a special joy; all interaction would be one of rapture. And to this is where life is heading. It can not only return to dissolution in a back-home movement – but there is also an eternal Manifestation in terms of Fullness and Completeness, that is to manifest even at the life-levels – an evolving Manifestation.
So light, wisdom, and Fullness are not only to be experienced away from life; they are to manifest in life also. And what little joys and delights we may experience is an indication of That, in life.
Questioner: There must be then a fulfillment of desire, which is liberated: fulfilling desire without entering bondage.
Yes. It is then a self-delight through a self-expression. That is why I have always said that now life is lived in bondage, but a time and a moment will come when life will be lived in freedom.
Now there is suffering, which is representative of bondage. You feel the pain and the hunger because you feel the incompleteness, so there is suffering; but the moment you find the Fullness in every part of your being, at every level, then your expression will be one of self-delight, one of self-giving. So in giving to the other you are giving to yourself, and in giving to yourself you give to the other – this would be the experience.
And in that it would continue to manifest, and could manifest eternally – until of course life at an individual level was to be taken away, and dissolve in the Absolute.
Who is the individual anyway? It is the Absolute! It is that one Reality working itself out in any which way, in every way in every possible way. If you were to resolve yourself in the Absolute then, no despair would be there, or feeling as if you were dying. This despair would not be, this fear and anxiety would not be, of dissolving yourself in the Absolute – if it is to be, so be it. For ultimately, you are That.
That is why I said in the past, and I say it again, that through every individual life or manifestation in this creation the Reality is working itself out. All the oppositions that you have, all the conflicts – all that also, because everything has become possible and it will work itself out, raise itself to this position: one of wisdom, one of light, one of joy, one of exuberance, one that would not suffer. And yet it, the soul in life, has to pass through these stages where it feels the pain, and the suffering.
These things will end. The emotions one would experience, they would all the time go through changes, through the process of transformation. It is a refinement process; it is an onward process.
You see, that kind of desiring would be a desiring in God, in the Reality as a whole; there would not be a separation. You would have the experience of oneness with everything. It is a whole different space, so automatically desires are changed: there will be no compulsion, there will be a mastery, there will be a freedom, there will be a dynamism. You would be Master of nature, while now nature is compelling you into action through its impulses, through its urges.
And even that has been part of the process for life to continue. That is why it is said you are born of Mother Nature and yet ultimately you discover your kingship, your queenship.
Now the experience is one of a-purnam – incomplete; but when you experience purnam – complete, – if you started to feel it in your every pore, in your whole being, all your realisations backing it up, then your whole existence would be radically changed and transformed.
But it is a process, a procedure. You can have radical experiences and openings, but still it is a procedure that works according to time, in time – and one has to be with it. Therefore this kind of vigilance and alertness to situations within and without is needed, and the sincerity to reach out to this manifestation.
So one may have moments when one feels completeness and harmony and Fullness, but there may be many moments when one may not. That is why one has to continue with it, as it takes up your whole life, not only in a passive state of being but in the dynamics of its movement also.
And it does not mean that there would be just clones moving about: there would be a uniqueness of temperament, and yet one would be free in the temperament – so to modify the temperament, to enhance, to change, will be all at one’s will, spontaneous, and effortless.
